For instance, if you’re running a company that offers pool-cleaning supplies, it doesn’t make any sense to link to a pet-grooming company. Instead, you’ll probably consider building links with a company that is connected with pool construction.
Importance of keyword selection
Both links and content also work with keywords. The anchor text that links to and within your website should consist of the right words or phrases. Search engines consider key phrases with hyperlinks directing the user to a certain website as a vote in favor of the site. This means that the site is relevant to the key phrase. For instance, if you set up the key phrase “blue widgets” to carry a hyperlink that will direct the user to your website, the search engines will think that the website is relevant to the subject blue widgets.
While votes are not counted in the same way in search algorithms, it still goes without saying that an anchor text containing a relevant key phrase instead of a simple “Click Here” is more effective as far as attaining relevance is concerned.
There will be instances when you may be unable to control the anchor text for one-way links to your website but you can definitely tweak your internal links. When selecting anchor text, you want to factor in the key words that you’re aiming for. Sometimes it’s better to be more specific when it comes to key phrases. General phrases such as “mid-range laptops” tend to come with tougher and more competition compared to specific phrases such as “Inspiron laptops.” While you’ll probably see a lot of traffic for general key phrases, this doesn’t necessarily translate to sales activity. Users who search with specific search strings are usually those who are actively looking for something to purchase. They are online because they are interested in purchasing a laptop from a particular brand. Beinwg more specific may attract relatively fewer traffic but it does elicit increased conversions.
