Google in Negotiations to Acquire Digg
Google has been acquiring various Internet-related entities during the past few years and it seems that it doesn’t have plans of stopping just yet. According to another report, the Internet giant is currently in the process of finalizing the negotiations for its acquisition of social-news website Digg.com. According to a TechCrunch report, sources say that the “two companies have reportedly signed a letter of intent and are close to a deal that will bring Digg under the Google News property.” Reports further say that the Google was set to pay more or less a whopping $200 million for this acquisition.
The rumors on Google’s plan to acquire Digg started out in March. The news sent most Digg users into panic. Normally, both parties would be expected to keep mum about the rumors and no one will make an effort to confirm or deny the rumors. Last March, however, Digg CEO Jay Adelson came out with a statement saying that there wasn’t any truth to the acquisition news going around the Net. In his blog, he wrote, “Normally, our policy is to not comment about things like this but this morning’s rumors about a bidding war involving Google and Microsoft have (sic) created such a stir we feel compelled to tell you all directly that they are completely inaccurate.”
But that was a couple of months ago. This time around, both Google and Digg chose to keep quiet about the whole issue. Could there be some truth to the rumor, after all?
Many users have posted varied opinions on this piece of development. Some are inclined to believe that it was an inevitable acquisition as Google has been trying the potential of adding voting features for quite some time already. But most are still wondering – is Digg really that profitable? It seems that Google is just about to acquire another ho-hum toy.
