Importance of Meta Tags

Published by Rob at 3:47 am under SEO news

In a library, especially one that houses millions of books and other reading materials, the easiest and most convenient way to search for a particular material is through the card catalog. If you don’t want to spend the whole day going through shelf after shelf of books on child psychology, you want to consult the online card catalog system of the library and search for materials that discuss autism and other psychological disorders in children.

The same rule applies on the internet. Because the medium is so diverse and new information is added to it every second, it seems logical that search engines develop an indexing system based on several different details, primary of which are meta tags. While these are not necessarily what search engines prioritize when ranking websites, the importance of meta tags is still undeniable in cyberspace.

What are meta tags?

To understand the importance of meta tags, you need to know what they are in the first place. Meta tags serve to provide descriptions on the properties of a web page. They are bits of information that are usually incorporated in HTTP headers. These tags may also contain coding that search engines can read and use to index pages.

Meta tags make a search engine’s job easier because they work to tell them exactly what the web page is all about. In search engine optimization , there are three types of meta tags that are essential:

Title – This refers to the text that comes up on the title bar of your web browser. This is a page’s primary label.

Description – The description provides a quick summary of what the page is all about. You don’t really see this on the webpage but if you look through the HTML coding, you’ll find a description tag usually at the beginning of the code.

Keywords – the keywords are usually the gauge of relevance for search engines.

Optimizing tags

The primary importance of meta tags is in online visibility. They help make it easier for search engines to find a page. A few years ago, the use of these tags was underestimated in the search engine optimization industry mainly because search engines tend to overlook them. But since meta tags are mainly used in the search engine results pages to describe the site, you want to create descriptions that will entice users to click through the link and read through your content.
